Welcome to Podcasting for solopreneurs and FAQ Friday, where I answer a podcasting question in five minutes or less. Today's question is what is your favorite audio recording program? This question comes from aspiring podcaster Manjula. I hope I am pronouncing your name correctly and thank you so, so much for being a listener. All right, so let's talk about recording software because there are a lot of options out there and it definitely can feel a little overwhelming when you are just getting started. So my personal favorite for recording solo episodes, episodes with just you is Audacity. This program is completely free, it works on both Mac and PC platforms and it gives you everything you need to record and lightly edit your episodes without any fluff or fancy features that you don't actually need. Now I will be honest, Audacity is not the prettiest interface and there is a slight learning curve to using it, but it is super reliable. It is really easy to use once you learn the basics, I promise.
And there are tons of free tutorials out there to help you get comfortable with it quickly. A lot of people that I know really love Descript for their recording and editing and I tried this years ago. I did not love the interface. My brain just didn't work the way that they laid things out. But I have heard that they've made a lot of improvements and I do plan on giving it another try one day soon. There's also a lot of buzz around options like Riverside or Squadcast, but I have heard too many horror stories about recordings being lost for me to recommend this to to a beginner. So if you are going to be recording solo episodes and you want something that's simple and free to get started, Audacity is the perfect choice. I have been using this for years.
